Interim Dining Services Director Selected as Other Food Service Options Discussed ► Nancy Levandowski has been hired as the interim Director ofStudentDining while the Food Services Committee looks for a permanent replacement for the retiring Sheridan "Bud" Thorup. by BENJAMIN HUBBLE QC Asst. News Editor In response to the retirement of current Director of Dining Services Sheridan "Bud" Thorup, Nancy Levandowski has been selected as the interim replacement until apermanent solution is found. Levandowski was selected after the Food Services Committee, consisting of both students and faculty, was unprepared to make! an official recommendation for the dining services situation. . According to Dean of Student Susan Allen, "We weren't able to move as fast as we would have liked so we hired a food services consulting company, Fessel International, to help us with the survey and the proposal. They recommended that we get a temporary replacement (for Bud Thorup) and found Nancy Levandowski." Levandowski was hired and Michelle Tautfesl/QC Nancy Levandowski currently has a contract that ends May 31, 1995. Levandowski said that she was ready to strongly consider any changes recommend by the Food Services Committee and the students in general depending on the feasibility ofthe suggestions. "The changes need to come from the students. I have lots of ideas but their success depends on student input." Stated Levandowski. Some ofthe ideas, such as providing more nutritional information about the food, creating more "ambience," and reinstituting a "recipe contest" for students are already being considered. According to Allen, "The food services committee was a formed to serve as a task force on food services and a search committee to find a new Director of Dining Services. We had hoped to do campus visits and focus groups as well as student surveys to find out what people wanted. Based on that, we planned to make a proposal to request bids from various catering companies, such as Marriott." in regards to the future of the Campus Inn dining services, Allen stated "we are considering two possibilities: hiring an individual to take over as Director or hiring an independent catering company." Levandowski has worked as both a replacement Food Services Director and in the private sector of food distribution. Permanent members of the Photo Editor Food Services Committee are Dr. Irene Carly le, Dr. Bill Wadsworth, Dr. Mike McBride, Dean of Students Susan Allen, V.P. for Business and Finance Harold Hewitt and students Elise Edson, Sara Stockman, Dash Forsyth, and Annalee Paulo. "We definitely expect to have a permanent replacement before next fall. We feel that in order to improve food services we'll have to spend more money. However, we'll also have to figure out how expensive catering companies are since we can't afford spend too much money." said Allen Levandowski received her Bachelor of Sciences in Psychology/Business management from Santa Clara University. She has been involved with food service companies in the United States and Canada, working for companies such as California Crisp, Service America, and the Sega Corporation. ► Please see related article about Bud Thorup's 24 years of service on. pg. 7 STUDENT GOV'T Student Appointments to Joint Committees Left to Incoming COR Administration ►After failing to do neccessary annual apointments, COR of '94 chose to defer the appointments to the COR of 95. which will not convene until January. In the meantime joint facu Ity/adm inistrative committees have been forced to proceed without student input. by CHRIS LONGMAN QC Staff Writer Student appointments to many joint committees have been suspended until COR President-elect Brian Brown takes office. The committees, most of which have seats for student, faculty and administrative members, address campus issues ranging from educational policies to commencement preparations. , - Student representatives to many committees are selected annually by COR, generally in the early fall after school begins. This' year, applicants were solicited by a memo from the dean of students a few weeks ago. All students received the invitation and any full-time student in good academic and disciplinary standing is eligible for consideration. In the past, students who filled the positions were often previously acquainted with COR members. Dean of Students Susan Allen opted to dispatch the memo to all students because it would create a larger pool of potential representatives. Allen said, "We have had trouble getting students in the past because it's COR's job to fill the positions, and how do you find students beyond who you know?" Current ASWC President JaMarr Brown was pleased with the response to a general invitation. He said, "It's good to see so much student interest for the faculty committees. It's important for students to be involved because the decisions affect students. The more students get involved, the better off we'll be." Lori Bridda, one of three seniors recently appointed to the Commencement Committee by JaMarr Brown and the Executive "We have had trouble getting students in the past, becasue it's COR's job to fill the positions, and how do you find students beyond who you know?" -Susan Allen Dean of Students Committee of COR is enthusiastic about her job, saying, "I am pleased to be involved with this particular committee because I am a senior. I am looking forward to planning graduation." Appointments to this particu lar committee were made by JaMarr Brown because ofthe necessity that they get to work soon, but filling some of the other committees' positions will be left to incoming President Brian Brown, who plans to make appointments in January, at the second COR meeting of his administration. Brian Brown was also pleased with the new method of soliciting student participation. He said, "There was good response to the questionnaire and it shows that students do want a voice in what's going on in the college." Student positions on the Educational Resources Committee, the Commencement Committee, the College Hearing Board and the Whittier Scholars Committee have been filled.
