The Voice Of The Campus Since 1914 ADMINISTRATION Millman to Succeed Rossbacher as Dean of Faculty, Vice President for Academic Affairs ► After a longselectionprocess, Richard Millman of CSU San Marcos will fill the administrative position made vacant by Lisa Rossbacher^ by GEORGE RIGGLE QC Staff Writer Dr. Richard S. Millman has been named to replace Dr. Lisa Rossbacher as Whittier College Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. Millman, who was educated at Cornell University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, currently serves as Vice President of Academic Affairs, Provost, and Professor of Mathematics at California State University, San Marcos. Millman was selected and hired by Whittier College from a pool of more than a 100 candidates, the result of a nationwide search process led by the Dean Selection Committee chaired by President James Ash. The committee was commissioned to choose a replacement for Rossbacher who will leave Whittier in June to take the position of Dean of the College at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. photo courtesy of Public Relations Dr. Richard Millman The selection committee was widely represented by faculty, including professors Wendy Furman (English), Michael McBride (political science), Mary Finan (business), Danilo Lozano (music), and Fritz Smith (mathematics), but also included members of the administration, President Ash and Vice President for Business and Finance Harold Hewitt, as well as junior Brian Brown, trustee Chandler Myers, and alumnus Robert Zemsky (class of 1962). Hewitt stated, apart from acting as a mediator of faculty rela tions with administration and students, the Dean of Faculty is responsible for decisions on matters such as promotion and tenure of faculty members, and the allocation and distribution of resources. This person must possess, Hewitt noted, the understanding and "ability toconsiderevery decision from the standpoint of what is best for Whittier College." According to Hewitt, it was Millman's strong combination of scholarly and educational excellence with a high level of experience at the "senior level of administration" which made him "most appealing" to the selection committee. Millman's wide range of experience, observed Jonathan Meer, executive assistant to the president, should make him an excellent "facilitator between faculty and administration," and, also, help to maintain "a strong relationship between students and faculty." Meer pointed out, the obvious strength of any small liberal arts institution is "teaching: the relationship of faculty and students." Prior to his tenure as founding Provost of Cal State San Marcos, Millman served as Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at Wright State University in Ohio where he also taught in the fields of Mathematics and Electrical Engineering. Hewitt strongly believes Mill- man is the right person for the job, stating he is "very impressed with Rich [Millman]" and "very excited with his selection." Hewitt thinks Millman brings much more to Whittier College and to the Dean of Faculty position than the ability "to run [things] status quo." Millman, Hewitt claimed, isa person who will be "innovative,... provide real leadership, and effective change," citing the Provost's creation of many exciting programs at Cal State San Marcos, including a volunteer service learning program to benefit the local community. Professor of English Wendy Furman agreed, calling Millman a "proven visionary" who took Cal State San Marcos from its founding, five years ago, and turned it into a "really booming" institution. In addition, Furman called Millman an experienced administrator, "achange agent," with ability and skill to lead— a person whose "values would fit those of the College. STUDENT GOV'T Stimler Elected Program Board Chair for'95-'96 A Legacy of Love by JEFF HEYNEN QC Staff Writer After much deliberation, the Council of Representatives chose sophomore Dave Stimler as the 1995-1996 Program Board Chair. Stimler will be replacing senior Christine Volden. Stimler, chosen from a field of candidates including sophomore Jeremy Curran and freshman Liza Gershman, plans to stick to the traditional events, while also bringing in programs which are "educational, entertaining and (perhaps) even multicultural." He recognizes that "our [the Program Board's] job is to entertain" and that "we have a big portion of COR's budget," hinting at his willingness to utilize these funds to keep the students socially satisfied. Stimler is planning to distribute questionnaires to the student body to "find out what they want" and to get students interested in the Program Board itself, for he Dave Stimler (center) and some friends will be electing a panel of individuals to serve on this body. Stimler added that he is going to be working with both Volden and the advisor Laura Butler "as soon as possible so that events can beplanned and theirdates fixed so that students will know what to expect."
