ADMINISTRATION ► The Lancer Society's annual dance Erotic City was nearly cancelled when an advertisement for the dance drew an unfavorable public response. BY ERIN BROOKS QC Staff Writer An advertisement paid for by the Lancer Society promoting their annual dance, Erotic City, has come under the scrutiny and criticism of the Dean of Students, Susan Allen. The advertisement, published in the Sept. 12 issue ofthe QC, has drawn concern over its so-called "suggestive nature". The advertisement, featuring a Playboy cover, was one of a series the Lancers planned to publish. Plans have subsequently changed. "Concern has been expressed by women on campus that the ad did not reflect a positive or comfortable image and that it could set up an expectation that doesn't allow for respect," Dean Allen said. The ninth annual Erotic City dance is still planned for Oct. 19 "Even if it was intended to be funny, the concern is that some people may misinterpret the message and believe that the normal expectations of boundaries and respect aren't there..." —Susan Allen in The Spot and is one of Whittier's few theme dances. Lancer President Steven Benard described the dance as "fun in a scantily clad ■environment. In the ad itself, she has more on than [what] people wear to a pool." The points in question are the advertisement's intention and Dean Allen's pursuant actions. "Susan Allen played the mind ofthe college. We were not trying to offend anyone. It was meant to be fun and creative; there was no intention of any other notion," Benard said. As a member ofthe administration, Dean Allen's position Please see AD, pg. 6 Spot Faces Problems in First Months of Operation CAMPUS INN ► The anxiously awaited Spot has already met with a number of equipment and logistical difficulties that are soon to be addressed by BRIAN BARBER QC Staff Writer The Spot, Whittier College's new eatery, officially opened its doors at the beginning ofthe 1996- 97 academic year. Due to the novelty of The Spot, there have been some problems in its initial development. Student reaction to The Spot has been for the most part favorable, but as with any new campus addition, there has been some criticism. Equipment problems have affected The Spot's overall performance. During the first two weeks, the fryer was down and the frozen yogurt machine was out of order. These are problems that are expected to happen less often as the employees begin to better un- ",.. Hoover Lautrup Scheduled for Renovation in 1997 CAMPUSBUjLDINGS ► Equipment and structural changes are scheduled to be made to the well-used Hoover auditorium as part of the upcoming Capital Campaign. by DAGOBERTO LOPEZ QC Staff Writer With a gracious "six-figure" gift underwritten by Wh it- tier College's Board of Trustees Secretary, Doloris Lautrup Ball, the Lautrup Auditorium (Hoover 100) will undergo a major overhaul projected for summer of'97. Ball has been on the Board of Trustees since 1962, and her parents were also trustees duringthel930's when she attended Whittier. The specific amount of the donation will be announced on Oct. 11 in accordance with the capital campaign. The current equipment in the frequently used auditorium will be upgraded with state-of- the-art multi-media equipment. There are currently "two sixteen millimeter projectors and a slide projector that are 15- years*old," Director ofthe Media Center Rich Chetham said. Cheetham also added that these will be replaced by a video/computer rear-projector system that includes a six by eight foot screen and upgraded sound system. Cheatham is one of the persons involved with the technical aspects of this project. In addition to the multi-media system, there will also be new seating, new carpeting and handicap requirement will be met, according to Director of Projects, Nelson Park.
