The Voice Of The Campus Since 1914 Lacrosse Gives, Receives at Homeless Shelter COMMUNITY NEWS ► The Whittier College Lacrosse team has,foritssecond year, participated in a church- sponsored homeless assistance program which involves every member of the team in a volunteer position at a homeless shelter. by JEANNETTE PEREDA QC Staff Writer Every night from Oct. 22, through Nov. 3, members of Whittier College'smen's lacrosse team have volunteered their time by spending the night assisting the homeless at the First Friends Church in Whittier. The First Friends Church has opened its doors to the homeless every night for the first two weeks of this year's colder months. The First Friends Church is one of a number of churches in the uptown area who have volunteered their time and facilities to aid in providing shelter for the homeless. Coordinated by the Interfaith Council, which consists of members of many different religious affiliations including Mormon, Jewish, Christian Scientist, Catholic and Protestant, members of ■•-. Each church will take on the responsibility of housing the homeless for a period of no more than two weeks at a time. This arrangement lasts for five months out of the year, during the worst weather, according to Edith Haynes, coordinator of the shelter program at First Friend's Church. Last year was the first year the lacrosse team participated in this service program. Lacrosse team coach Douglas Locker said, "it's a great opportunity for my players to get involved in their communi- ty." Locker appointed team captain Damien Ramondo to coordinate the proj ect. "We hope to begin a new tradition of dynamic and well- attended homecomings," described director of alumni relations Christine Nelson ('72). Poets of the past will meet Poets ofthe present at "The Rock" for the new "Under The Tent" event Saturday, Nov. 9, from 12- 4 p.m. There will be a carnival- type atmosphere with games, cotton candy, cold drinks and live entertainment by the Free Range Chickens. Members ofthe band include alumni Kitt Clark ('89) and Byron Schatz ('86). During the event, there will be student- staffed tables to bring alumni up to date with the changes since their graduation.
