Orthogonians to Erect Nixon Memorial CAMPUS ► After a three-year process of generating $11,000, the Orthogonian Society is scheduled to construct a memorial to late Orthogonian Richard Milhous Nixon. by CATHERINE PAYNE QC Senior Staff Writer On April 22, the Orthogonian Society will dedicate a memorial to the late Orthogonian and former U.S. President Richard M. Nixon. The memorial will be constructed out of black granite, and located near the Orthogonian Pond, which is situated in front of the Mendenhall parking lot. The dedication will also serve as a groundbreaking, and commemorate the anniversary of Nixon's death. The $11,000 cost of the memorial is being supplied entirely by the Orthogonian Society, past and present. According to Nixon Memorial Chair, senior Christian Lozano, though the active members have raised a great deal of the money needed, the majority ofthe funds -re being donated by alumni. Photo courtesy of Marcus Parcdcs The soon to be constructed Nixon memorial will honor the late Whittier alumnus while helping to improve and strengthen ties between Whittier College and the Nixon family. "We didn't want to eliminate any brother," Lozano said. "We wanted to make this a group O project." Because of this philosophy, practically all ofthe Orthogonians who have graduated from Whittier since 1929 were contacted and informed about the efforts to honor the past U.S. and Orthogonian president. The result of this exten sive outreach was that the remainder of the money needed to fund the project was obtained. The project is expected to be completed later this year. The actual completion of the monument will be the culmination of three years' work by the society. The Orthogonians began to lobby for some kind of memorial when Nixon died in 1994. "Upon his [Nixon's] death," Lozano said, "the Orthogonian Society wanted to build a monument because we noticed a lack of any visual memorial recognizing the fact that Nixon had come to our school. As [he was] President of the United States one, and President ofthe Orthogonians two, we wanted to recognize this fact." Please see MEMORIAL, pg. 4 Pierro Steps Down as ASWC Vice President STUDENT GOV'T ► The freshly-filled position of COR Vice President is vacant once again, as the recently elected Billy Pierro has stepped down for academic reasons. by LORNA BELL QC Editor-in-Chief Recently elected vice-president of COR, junior Billy Pierro, formally announced his resignation on Monday, Feb. 10, 1997. Pierro was placed on partial academic probation due to his academic performance last semester, and he has "chosen to step down to focus on academics," according to Pierro. According to the COR constitution, in the event of a vacant position, the president has the option of appointing a member ofthe Whittier College community to fill the position for the remainder ofthe administration. Current president Keristofer Saryani has opened up the position to all eligible sophomores and juniors. Pierro's resignation came about after receiving grades which were lower than he anticipated last semester, Pierro said. "Being on partial probation means I have to pull my grades up this semester or I cannot hold a position." According to Dean of Students Susan Allen, the College does not require students on partial probation to resign from leadership positions; however, they are "strongly encouraged" to resign. Students on full academic probation or discipline probation are not allowed to hold leadership positions. Allen said that there has never been a situation in the past where a student who was encouraged to resign, refused and had to be forced. Pierro said he knew he had taken on too much and had to make a priority list. "I was overextended," Pierro said. "My choice came down to either putting everything into my job as vice-president and flunk school, or focus on school and do a bad job as vice-president."
