Ash Discusses Future of Honor Code With BOG By Jim Westerberg QC Staff Writer Whittier President Dr. James Ash attended last Wednesdays Board of Governors (BOG) meeting to discuss the issueof an honor code at Whittier College. Ash presented the possibility of having an honor code based on research that was done by a committee last year. The committee investigated different types of honor codes at other colleges and universities around the nation. Ash asked BOG to consider creating a task force that would develop and propose an outline of a honor code, subject to student and faculty approval. Several BOG members TALKING IT OVER: Left to right, President James Ash, Dr. Dave Garland, BOG advisor, Jeff Olson, freshman class President, Bill Mullowney, College Counsel, and Bill Erickson, President Pro-temp discuss the honor code. questioned the need for a honor code at Whittier College. Ash responded that, "if in the process of creating an honor code, the task force came to the conclusion that it is not needed, then that would be a viable solution as well." President Pro-temp, senior, Bill Erickson, asked Ash what tangiblebenefits would be found in having a honor code at Whittier College. He replied that "an honor code would provide a greater freedom for students to do their work." According to Bill Mullowney, College Counsel, one benefit of an honor code is to provide a signal to outsiders as to what can be expected at Whittier. BOG agreed to the formation of a task force to look into the creation of an honor code and decided that it would consist of four students, two faculty and Mullowney. However, BOG expressed concern to Ash that any proposed honor code must be approved by the students and the faculty before it can be accepted and implemented. "I agree wholeheartedly that if an honor code is adopted, it must come from the students," Ash said. Bennett Tries to Restart Safe Rides By Nan Davis QC Staff Writer "I care about the students," senior Richard Bennett, Board of Governors (BOG) Business Manager said, "they need a safe ride home." Bennett is trying to restart the safe rides program, that senior Bill Erickson began last year, but he is facing many liability problems with the college. "We have the structure, but we need the funding," Bennett said. If the college pays students to taxi intoxicated students, then the school becomes responsible. Please see SAFE page 4.
