Jim Bittner, a Whittier College football coach for two and half years, was arrested by the Whittier Police Department on a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery after two Private Person Arrest forms were filled out by a witness and by Richard Irwin, one of the students who was allegedly struck, according to a Whittier Police Department report. Michael Sullivan, the other student who was allegedly struck, refused to press charges at first, but later that night decided he wanted Bittner prosecuted, according to the report. Officers had difficulty dis- cussingthe incident withSullivan because he "was obviously intoxicated due to his slurred speech and his shouting and swearing and his uncooperative behavior," the report said. Sullivan, a freshman, declined to comment on how much alcohol he had during the party andsaidheremembers only parts ofthe incident. ' Irwin, 23, said he had three beers and a shot of whiskey mixed with something else within four hours and was "drinking socially, not heavily." Bittner refused to comment specifically on his actions during the evening, and refused to confirm or deny if he struck Sullivan and Irwin. He did confirm that he received a citation for assault and battery and has been suspended until a Campus Safety investigation is completed. "Basically there was a minor altercation," Bittner said. "Whether I was right or wrong in what I did is unknown." Bittner refused to comment on how much alcohol he had during the evening, but said he was within his limit and in control of his actions. Bittner refuted the police report which stated the officer could tell Bittner had been drinking. The police report, as ofTues- day, was being reviewed by a Whittier PD detective. A decision as to whether Bittner will be prosecuted will be made when it is turned over to the district attorney, Chuck Drylie, Whittier PD Community Relations Officer, said. The single punch which struck the two students was allegedly thrown while the three were outside the North main entrance ofthe Hilton. Minutes before Whittier PD and Hilton security had dispersed the Whittier College crowd after a minor altercation occurred in the main lobby area. Many people were moving outside into the parking lot, according to Irwin. According to the police report, a witness said that a "slight shoving match occurred (in the lobby) and the crowd began to move outside." Numerous Whittier PD officers were present due to "several small fights which had broken out among the 600 guest party," according to the report. As Whittier PD was dispersing the crowd Sullivan said he moved outside. Irwin said he was approaching Sullivan as Bittner Please see FIGHT pg. 5
