QUAKER CAMPUS Volume LXXVII, Number 24 April 18,1991 The Voice of Whittier College Since 1914 April 18,1991 By Sarah GammilWJC Photography Editor Ray Dezember, Chairman of the Whittier College Board of Trustees Speaks at the John Greenleaf Whittier Dinner. Dezember Praises Ash At Annual College Dinner By Julie Amiton QC Assistant News Editor "He has hit the ground running," Ray Dezember, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said of President James Ash, keynote speaker at the John Greenleaf Whittier Society annual dinner last Sunday in the Campus Inn (CI). "I believe he will lead us to the levels of performance and recognition we deserve." The purpose of the day, according to Ash, was to "share with the College's closest friends," the progress Whittier has made. Members of the Society were invited to "Sunday at Whittier," where they were able to spend the day on campus. "The event was designed to show Whittier College off to our closest friends and supporters, and allow them to see campus changes," Susie Pearce, Vice PresidentofAdvancement, said. Ash accredited recent changes on campus to the $18 million bond taken out by the College in December 1989. According to Ash, with this money, the College was able to address six major points on campus. Please see DINNER page 4. Stolen Computer Returned By Caitlin Duffy QC News Editor A $5,500 Macintosh 2SE computer which was stolen from the Computer Center in March, was found last Thursday morning outside of the mailroom, Carl Dury, Director of Computing Services said. When Phil Tizzino, mail clerk, arrived at the mailroom at 7:00 a.m., he noticed a large UHaul packing box sitting outside, addressed to the Computer Center. Dury, who came to check his mail at 10:00 a.m., received the box which contained the computer and monitor but was missing the keyboard and mouse. "The computer is intact and will eventually go into one of the student computer labs," Dury said. The Macintosh has been thoroughly inspected and, although Dury is pleased that it was returned, "the investigation will still continue." "Not all is forgiven," Dury added. According to Ed Malone, Director of Campus Safety, an investigator was brought in from a private firm to locate the computer. After evaluating the incident, the investigator submitted a report to Malone about possible scenarios. "It was necessary for an outsider to be hired, because, at the time (prior to Malone being hired), there was no one on the staff who could conduct investigations," he said. Malone will be reviewing the report this week and will "decide whether or not the investigation should continue." Calvert Upset With Administration; Sends Angry Letter to President Ash By Josh du Lac QC Sports Editor In response to an editorial published in the April 11 edition of the QC ("Why Can't We Win?"), Sherry Calvert, Assistant Director of Athletics, sentaletter to President James Ash which blamed the Administration for criticism directed towards all athletic programs on campus, with the exception of men's lacrosse. The letter stated: "I for one, with many others concurring, am angered beyond belief by the inaction ofWhittier College administrators regarding issues I and others have brought before you. "Not only have you subjected our coaching staff to public ridicule, but some 300 student-athletes who do not play lacrosse and who do not receive the privileges which have now become standard in the lacrosse program have now become ridiculed. "You need to accept the responsibility for these insults Sherry Calvert directed towards the majority of our student athletes, as the facilitator of a system which provides privileges to one team not made available to any other team." The letter continued: "The unfairness of these insults to student-athletes in all sports except lacrosse cannot be excused. An apology to these students will not be enough. The damage which our programs have incurred as a result of this inevitable outcome is immeasurable. Quite frankly, Whittier College student-athletes deserve better. "I am incensed at the harm now inflicted on my student- athletes and all others in the athletic department as well. This, on top of the concerns I have previously expressed, has heightened my desire to take action. Indeed, I am not sure I can continue to look myself in the mirror and feel I am being true to the things I believe, to not move forward in some way." In addition to the letter addressed to Ash, Calvert drafted a petition that was to be signed by all consenting Please see LETTER page 14.
