uaker Campus Thursday, October 26, 2006 Issue 8 - Volume 93 QC@WHITTIER.EDU Johnson and Tryon crowned Mr., Ms. Whittier Justin Velasco QC News Editor The ten-foot bonfire provided enough warmth and light for the crowning of seniors Connor Tryon and Barbara Johnson, as Mr. and Ms. Whittier, on Friday Oct. 20, in the Upper Quad. "Greek Gods and Goddesses" was this year's Homecoming theme, which involved various activities, including a Saturday football game, [for the full story see Sports, page 16], carnival and dance at the Radisson Hotel in Uptown Whittier, which was a safe, crimeless event, according to Assistant Chief of Campus Safety John Lewis. For a full color spread of Homecoming events, see Campus Life pages 8 and 9. Whittier College President Sharon Herzberger announced the Homecoming winners for the first time in her presidency. After Herzberger crowned Johnson and Tryon, the couple walked down the steps arm in arm and celebrated. "I actually didn't think that I was going to win Mr. Whittier because I had some amazing people as competitors," Tryon said. "I actually feel that all of us represent the college as well as the other but just in different ways. That's not to say that it isn't a great feeling. It felt awesome, and I was very honored to be selected by the student body. I was king for a weekend." Johnson said, "I was just myself and put out my best effort. The main thing is that I just had a great time with it." "This is the most successful bonfire I have ever seen," junior Program Board Member Carlos Salazar said. "It was great to work with the Alumni Association. It added a whole new theme to the bonfire." Clay won the Best Dressed award, as well as the Whittier Trivia. dates were seniors Donato Clay, Jenzie Hallifax, Jason Jenkins, Mike Rosenkrantz, Krista Key, Bianca Naylor, Bobbie Roy and Robin Warfel; all of whom were required to participate in the different competitions. See Campus Life page 8-9 for the full story. The winners of the Spirit Stick competition were Hallifax and Warfel. The winners of the Toga competition were Tryon and Roy. The winners of the Whittier Trivia were Roy and Clay. The spirit award was given to Rosenkrantz and Hallifax, and the Best Dressed award was given to Roy and Clay. Saturday's Homecoming football game against <■ La Verne brought dis- JWP appointment to football fans when Whittier lost 27-14. Halftime provided a few minutes of entertainment with Whittier's dance team performing the Pussy Cat Doll's song "Buttons," and Mr. and Ms. Whittier made an appearance on the field. Herzberger also received a check, the Aumni gift, for $3,909,446.61. The Homecoming carnival, which took place on Saturday, Oct. 22, in the Upper Quad after the football game, featured a bounce house obstacle course called the "Thunder Force" and another inflatable platform called the "Bungee Run," where students could hook their body up to a sling-shot and launch themselves across the inflated mat. Only a few clubs and societies decided to set up booths, which is down from last year, Program Board Member and sophomore Nadine Barragan said. In previous years, the carnival took place on the baseball field, but according to Barragan, the carnival had to be held in the Upper Quad because the baseball field is undergoing maintenance. \j^ Later that night, the ~" annual Homecoming party was held at the Radisson and was packed tight with Whittier College students, faculty, staff and alumni. The party featured a dance floor, a live band in another - room and the outside patio area for attendees to cool off and escape the inside heat from the bodies. Sophomore Mike Muse was glad that there weren't any fights at the Radisson and that only one person jumped into the pool. "Compared to last year it was a much better environment," he said. "It seems like a much more controlled environment." According to Lewis, there were no "hiccups," no crimes or trips to the hospital during the weekend.
