International Students Attending Retreat Dr. Laverne Young, Professor of Science at CBC, will be a featured speaker at the International Student Retreat, to be held April 2-4 at Sugar Pine Camp near Yosemite National Park. All international students and their American student friends are encouraged to attend. In addition to discussions led by the guest speakers, students at the retreat will have the opportunity to take part in a sightseeing tour of Yosemite National Park. Also, a talent parade will be organized for those who wish to participate. This retreat offers Americans and internationals alike a unique opportunity to come to a closer walk with Christ. Joe Strother, Jr., pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in San Bernardino will be guest speaker for chapel services. April 2 Drama Trio i—Trustee Meeting Names Men's Hall Only hours before the death of P. Boyd Smith, first president of California Baptist College, trustees ofthe college voted to name the men's residence hall in his honor. This action was taken at a recent trustee meeting on March 4-5. Not only was the hall renamed, but other subjects were discussed. Financial matters were in the spotlight throughout the meeting which otherwise dealt largely with routine internal matters. A budget of $1,505,620 was adopted for the fiscal year 1971-72, an increase of $209,355 over the present year. Trustees were faced with rising costs in numerous areas. In response they voted to increase room and board for dormitory residents from $455 to $460 per semester and increased monthly rent on married students apartments. Monthly rent for one bedroom apartments was raised from $87.50 to$95.00 and from $105.00 to $115.00 for two bedroom apartments. faced with a need for extensive modifications to upgrade the electrical service to campus buildings, the trustees voted to authorize the work to be done in stages. as money is available, and as necessitated by anticipated renovations in the library and science laboratories. It is thought that the electrical modifications will cost approximately $27,000. Competitive bids will be sought. Board members addressed a formal resolution to The Southern Baptist General Convention of California asking the state convention to reconsider its appropriation to the college for the fiscal year 1971-72. The convention in its last meeting voted $221,430 for the college, giving the school $6,715 ofthe $40,000 increase in the total budget. Board members expressed the opinion that convention support is too low and is forcing the college to raise tuition and fees tounrealist- ically high levels. They were nearly unanimous in feeling that the convention should channel a larger part of its income to California Baptist College. Trustees also voted to hold two meetings yearly instead of the three now scheduled. However they voted to hold the third date as a possible meeting in case the chairman of the board and the president of the college deem it necessary. Festival Features Sally Thomas Featuring folk musicians Sally Thomas, Eric Autoharp, and The Blue Grass Band of Penny University, the Folk Festival of this Friday evening will be "fantastic," according to Sue Schaback- er, coordinator of the concert. Also performing will be CBC talent -- the Sonshine Package, Larry Longshore, and Debbie Belohovek's group with Sammee Gee and Brad Hansen. "Last year's festival was great,'-' Debbie Belohovek enthusiastically said. SallyThomas highlighted 1970's Folk Festival, accompanying herself on the guitar. Eric Autoharp, part owner r Study Tour Planned For British Isles-1 A European Study Tour is being planned for late this summer by D. Wayland Marler, history professor at CBC. The study tour will count six primarily concentrated on> the British Isles, although some countries on the continent will also be visited. "Cost is $1,195, but price should not discourage a student who really wants to go, **Marler said. "Many penniless students have somehow found ways to manage it." Flying Air Canada, members of the group would tour England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg. •' *m—mi>mi "This is a virtually painless way to learn," asserted Marler. The tour would be the last part of the summer, enabling students to attend the first summer session. Cowles, Dana Horn, Dr. Martin L. Thomas (seated), and Ed. J. Packwood, all of Riverside, were among those attending the meeting of the California Baptist College Board of Development. Packwood has recently been named by the college as a vice-president for development, and Horn is a vice-chairman ofthe board. The board is composed of a select group of men committed to assisting Cal Baptist in financing the development and improvement of facilities.
