Concert Choir Assists Touring Opera Group San Francisco Opera's Western Opera Theater will present a co-production ofDontizetti's "The Elixir of Love" with the Riverside Opera Company on Tuesday evening. May 1, 1973 at 8:15 p.m. at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium. Western Opera Theater, a touring company and subsidiary of the San Francisco Opera recently presented "La Traviata" in Riverside under the sponsorship ofthe Riverside Opera Association. This production was acclaimed as excellent and fully professional. Western Opera Theater is a true repertory company in the sense that head singers in today's production may take minor roles in tomorrow's. "The Elixer of Love" will feature soprano, Jacquelyn Benson, who was a great favorite as Vio- letta in the recent production of "La Traviata." She is an" attractive young singer with a beautiful bel cantoquality in her voice. The opera will also feature our own CBC Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Curtis Cheek, a Riverside orchestra contracted by Morris Goffin and Supernumeraries from the Drama Dept. at Ramona High School under the direction of Mr. Gary Gerdes. Alan Lewis, the conductor, has been an assistant conductor for the San Francisco Opera for three seasons. Previously he was musical director for the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Conn., and has been an assistant conductor with the Dallas Civic Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Opera Company of Boston and the Juilliard Opera Theater. General director ofthe Riverside Opera Association, Frances Calkins, states, "By combining our efforts in a co-production with Western Opera Theater we are privileged to have the experience of highly professional stage directors, which is becoming more and more difficult to obtain in the Southern California area. Our chorus of young people benefits greatly from this artistic experience, as well as our audience. Because San Fran- WHEEE! ZELLA WHORTON and Bethany Bownds were two ofthe first participants in the Marathon. More students are needed. BSU Gives Students Some Ups Downs CBC students have been transported back to the days of childhood. Those were the good 'ole' days when you climbed trees, rode your skate board, and enjoyed the fine art of teeter- tottering. For five hours yesterday students took turns on the teeter-totter of their choice. The action will resume today at 2 p.m. and you are encouraged to help out in anyway you can. First you could enlist sponsors so you can have a chance to ride. Ifyou have to miss all this fun, you can still donate your money to this worthy cause of summer missions. Just contact any of the summer missions committee or Joe Cutsinger. You can also give moral support to the riders. It is not as easy as it looks. It is difficult to believe the wear and tear on the body until you have experienced hours of riding the unpadded or semi-padded (the deluxe model) teeter-totter. The spirit is willing but the bodies seem weary. Fifteen to twenty students are expected to sacrifice their time and their bodies to this noble cause. It is expected that $200 will be raised from this event. If at least the $200 is raised, the $1200 goal will be within easy reach. The final activities will include a chapel offering, the penny-liner, and the collection of the pledges. "Let's go over the goal", says Carmen Sandoval who is coordinating the drive. cisco Opera sponsors a touring company such as Western Opera Theater which is handsomely endowed by numerous grants, the cost to the Riverside Opera Association is considerably less than mounting our own chorus, supers and orchestra, thereby having community involvement without the financial and physical burden of producing opera without subsidy." "The El ixer of Love," sung in English, is a two actcomicopera suitable for family entertainment. Tickets are $4.00 each with a special rate of $1.50 for senior citizens 65 and over and students under 22. Seats are unreserved. MERRIL SMOAK All students with some experience in theatre interested in acting are invited and encouraged to audition today at 3 p.m. in the drama office for the 1973 - '74 Drama Trio. This is a performing group which represents the school in churches, schools, rallies, and conventions. Hopefully there will be enough interest this year to make it possible to form two groups. If this is the case one of the groups would undoubtedly incorporate music into their repertoire. Therefore, if you also have musical learnings you are invited to audition. Irving Shaw, speech-theatre department chairman, would like to see enough interested people audition to make it possible to select two groups by the end of this school year. "It is my hope," Shaw stated, "to have a more fully rounded program for next year. This would allowus to meet the needs of a more diversified program and to present a multimedia type program where an in terest is expressed. Many churches want a full evening's program and this expanded Drama Trio idea would allow us to present them with varied talents and entertainment." All CBC students are encouraged to audition for either of these new Drama Trios Friday at 3 p.m. in the drama department office. Selections for the new Drama Trios will be announced in the near future.
