CBC Mourns Sibyl Brown Two Out of Four Place in Contest Carmen Sandoval and Bill Rhoades captured fifth place at the Mustang Invitational Speech Contest held at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, this weekend. The contest was held Friday and Saturday. Rhoades and Miss Sandoval were part of a four man entry coached by Mrs. Norene Hokett, assistant professor of speech. Mike Sellers and Jack Tewalt also represented Cal Baptist. Rhoades placed fifth in the novice persuasive speech category. His speech on the government included the problem with the recent Watergate case and the problem of the presidential privilege. Fifth place in the novice oral interpretation category was won by Miss Sandoval. Herthemewas on deafness and the last selection was a simultaneous reading and "signing" presentation. This was CBC's first time to enter a speech contest. Participants included students from CSU Hayward, CSU Fresno, and CSU San Fra-Hx iwo who ww. t»k>«- sweepstakes trophy. Categories included novice and champion ship oral interpretation; extemp- eraneous and persuasive speech in the novice and championship division and debate. All participants appeared in three rounds of competition and were rated on a one to five scale. The six lowest scorers in each division became the finalists and competed one last time for the championship. The state schools were impressed that two of CBC's four students made the final round of competition. Most ofthe participants had never heard of Cal Baptist. The competition was keen. The first place winner in the novice oral interpretation division read a selection in Spanish and in English to capture her trophy. The second place winner's presentation on women was beautifully read. She has appeared on the TV shows, "The Partridge Family" and "The Brady Bunch". They are anxious to continue the hard work. —■*-■-. *. i. Her Life And Her Love. Devoted Library Founder Loses Cancer Bout Mrs. Sibyl Brown was laid to rest Monday at Crestlawn Memorial Park. Her death, from cancer last Thursday, closed the books on 22 years of devotion and dedication to the coljege she loved. Building the AnnieGabriel Library from a bookshelf to a noted library was an ardous task which she undertook and successfully completed. Mrs. Brown, born Jan. 18, 1918, in Muleshoe, Texas, received her B.A. from W. Texas State University. She obtained her masters degree in library science from USC. Funeral services were held Monday at Magnolia Avenue Baptist Church. Dean Dewey Jones. Dr. George Musacchio, Dr. James Staples, and her pastor, Larry Nixon all participated in the service. From the reading of her favorite verses to the talk given by Nixon, the service was deeply spiritual and moving which was a tribute to Mrs. Brown's deep devotion to God. Singing for the service was the Magnolia Avenue Baptist Church Choir. Mrs. Helen Walker also sang two of Mrs. Brown's favorites, "God Leads Us Along" and "Sunrise Tomorrow". Serving as pallbearers were Gary Collins, Dr. Ken Futch, J.L. Hardin, Pat McGrew, S.C. Smith,and Dr. LaVern Young. She is survived by her husband Olie, and daughter, Mrs. Richard Melchior, and son, Alton Theoran. Mrs. Brown's grave is behind a stature of Christ kneeling in could not have been selected for one whose faith was so intense. Run Off To Be Held Class Elections For ASB President Begin Next Week The Associated Student Body officer election was held last Friday. As a result, therewillbe a run off for the office of president. The two candidates, Lonnie Halley who got 157 votes will be running against Al Johnson who got 101 vjtes in the first run off for the presidency. Each candidate needed 170 votes in order to get the office. Because no one got a majority, the top two candidates have to run off. The run off is scheduled for this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The polls will close tomorrow at 4 p.m. for the ASB president election. Chris Hess won the office of vice president by a vote of 185. "I'm excited about it," she cried out in joy. Unopposed Teresa Holden got the position of secretary by 281 votes. "I'm glad about it. I wish to get involved in the ASB in the coming year, and I want to work with the president, vice-president and social chairman." Miss Holden had been the secretary in ASB in her high school and junior high, so she has the experience of taking down the minutes during meetings. The social chairman is Kathi Connolly who got 179 votes. She exclaimed, "I feel good, I'm happy about it. I'll try to get the college more involved in the ASB. I wish to see everybody help". The social chairman deals with the social events of the ASB. Some of the events are the Yule, the Homecoming and the Orientation Week.. Result of the run-off for the office of presidency will be published in next week's Banner. Cosa Blanca Team Forms CBC students are taking advantage of serving in a week-day ministry program with children through the BSU program called mission teams. One group will go to the Casa Blanca area and one will go to the Mira Loma area. The Casa Blanca group will conduct their work at the Baptist Church of Casa Blanca. Pastor Oscar Salinas and his wife, Linda, alumnus of CBC, will assist the team. Serving in the Casa Blanca area will be Ricardo Lobato, Rhys Osmer, Debbie Donalson, Charlie Buckner, Jeri Edwards, Cindi Atwood, and Carmen Sandoval. A second team is forming that will use the facilities of the Mira Loma Southern Baptist Church. In April, Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors will hold class election. Candidates can run for the office of presidency, vice- president and secretary-treasurer. Since this concerns the whole class, every student capable of handling the position satisfactorily is urged to hand in their petition. Petitions for the Freshmen starts on March 30 and will last for a week till April 6. Officer election takes place on the following week, the second week of April. Sophomores are presently turning in petitions until this Friday, March 30. Officer election takes place on the first week of April, on the 5th and 6th, Thursday and Friday. Juniors petition will be available next week. Students can get them from Patti Hicks in Room 206A Simmons Hall or MikeKel- ley in Room 360 Smith Hall. Election will be held on the first week of April, on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. All students are urged to participate in elections. Choir To Present Home Concert WHO GETS THE HOT SEAT?-Waiting for the election of their leader are the new ASB officers Kathi Connoly, Chris Hess, and Teresa Holden. Students may sign up now for the teeter-totter marathon to be held April 26-28. Contact Joe Cutsinger, Rick Dodd, Jan Jameison, or Carmen Sandoval. Sponsor cards are available. The Concert Choir will be presenting a concert Friday, April 6. in the Chapel. The complete hour of music will include religious selections and entertaining "Gay '90's" favorites. ' The first half of the program will open with Sing We Merrily Unto God by M. Shaw. Other selections will be Cantate Domino, Pitoni; In The World There Is Pain, Distler; Put Thou Thy Trust In God, Vick; Praise God!, Mo- zare; Go and Tell John, Pfautsch; Listen To The Lambs, Dett; I Hear a Voice A-Praying, Bright; Hear My Prayer, Mendelssohn with soprano soloist Nelda Black or Trudy Robinson. Walking on the Green Grass, Hennagin; Like as the Culver. Stevens; and To The Old , Long Life, Cortes. The "Gay 90's" Medley will include golden oldies such as Daisy, While Strolling Through The Park, Kentucky Babe, No, No, A Thousand Times No, by Denise Watkins, Hello Ma Baby, with Ken Evans as baritone soloist, Till We Meet Again, Nobody, by Dr. Cheek, a medley by The Barbershop Quartet composed of Steve Flynn, Marty Leach, Dan Moscrop and Cheek, and Sidewalks of New York. During the "Gay 90's"youwill see part of the choir seated on the stage and each singer "doing his own thing." This is a concert you will thoroughly enjoy.
