We 'BANNER^, Page 1, January 14, 1977 McWhinney Earns Who's Who Title by Carmen Sandoval Dr. James McWhinney, chairman ofthe division ofprofessional science services, education, business education, and physical education, here at California Baptist College was recently chosen to Who's Who Biographical Record Child Development Professionals. This first edition of Who's Who Biographical Record Child Development Professionals contains the biographies of men and women throughout the United States who are working in the fields of child guidance and child development. Included are child psychologists and guidance counselors, special education teachers, reading counselors and teachers specializing New SCTA Officers Jim Benham was unanimously elected president of the CBC chapter of Student California Teachers' Association (SCTA) at the January 10 meeting. Jim takes his position from Ken Land is who will be doing his student teaching next semester. Other officers for 1977 include Ruth Kuzichev as vice-president (Helen Bilynskyj will assist her in her duties, which include helping the president, presiding in the president's absence, and taking charge of publicity for the club), Debbie Wright as secretary, and Sharon Holman as program chairman (with Darlene Hull as her co- chairman). The outgoing president stressed the important responsibilities of the offices because "we're (SCTA) growing!" Mrs. Brown reminded us that she placed all her teaching graduates last semester (one on long-term substitution), although the state average is only 44%. SCTA is a statewide organization designed to benefit prospective teachers. CBC is also affiliated with NEA (National Education Association). All interested students are encouraged to attend the meetings (held the second Monday of each month at ten in room 125) for information regarding the teaching program. in the education of handicapped children. Also listed are directors of Head Start, Day Care, and other pre-school programs and college and university professors of education and educational psychology. In 1974 and 1975, Dr. McWhinney was named as one of the outstanding educators of America for CBC. In addition he has been a recipient of the Christopher Columbus award for Spanish Language and recipient of an honorary life membership award through the California Congress of Parents and Teachers. Dr. McWhinney has been a high school art teacher and a junior high and elementary teacher in New York City public schools as well as public schools in Arizona and California. He has been principal at various schools in the Moreno Valley Unified School District where he worked with intern teachers and coordinated the art and foreign language programs while serving as principal. Next he was employed by the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools office as a coordinator of instruction with Seniors There will be a senior class meeting on Monday, January 17, at 10 a.m. in room 125. Linda Koontz, class president, urges each senior to be present to discuss the selection of the annual class gift. Everyone is needed to contribute ideas and thoughts concerning the final selection of the gift. Every senior is being asked not to miss this very important meeting. Dr. McWhinney major assignments in art, foreign language, English (asa second language) and special assignments working with the 23rd District PTA, minority group programs. Following his employment with the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools he served as regional director or superintendent for American schools in Uruguay. In Montevideo he supervised two schools (grades kindergarten through twelfth) and Uruguayan liceo or high school. In Mercedes, which is in the interior, he supervised another school (kindergarten through sixth). In all schools his instruction was in both English and Spanish. The school boards in both systems were bilingual and bi- national. In addition to teaching at Cal Baptist, McWhinney teaches courses in education at Chapman College and March Air Force Base in California. He has collaborated in the writing of federal projects for the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools office and has served as director for one of them. He served as director of operation "gearshift" Title Three ESEA. He has also assisted inthe writing of other projects for the office and has written Title One ESEA Projects and NDEA Projects Title 3 A and 3B. McWhinney has also been pub lished in the CTA journal, a publication of the California State Department of Education and in a classics review. His dissertation at the University of Southern California was entitled 'The Administration, Supervision and Foreign Language Program in the Elementary School." In addition, he served as special consultant in foreign language, an ESO forCali- fornia State Department of Education and has worked on two county, four county, and nine county cooperative projects for the state. McWhinney, a native of College Point, New York, received his doctorate of education from the University of Southern California in 1964 with a major in educational administration with a specialty in elementary curriculum. He earned his M.S. in education at the University of the City of New York in 1942 with a major in education where he also obtained his B.A. degree in education in 1939. Feb. 14 Special Monday Chapel sponsored by ASB featuring Lamb's Players. Feb. 16 Dr. Ralph Langley of Willow Meadows Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, is in connection with Staley lectures being held February 16 and 17. Feb. 18 Drama presentation by Images, a group formed by CBC students led by Janie Crisp. Feb. 23 James R. Roamer -a home missionary serving on Coronado Island in San Diego. Feb. 25 Dr. George Massachio - head of the Department of English at CBC.
