"Royal Gambit," To Open This Weekend Students at CBC will have the rare opportunity to see some excellent drama tonight through Saturday, May 20. The current production is "Royal Gambit" by Hermann Gressieker (translated by George White.) It is being directed by acting drama department head Lee Scanlon. This is the fifteenth play directed by Scanlon. He has directed in community and university theater "from Boston to Bangkok." Music and costuming for "Royal Gambit" will all be authentic from the period represented. Becky Werner is acting as wardrobe mistress. Set design is by Eric Ismay. Ron Neufeld was in charge of set construction. Steve Jones is handling the lighting. Richard Reed is house manager. Denise Watkins is the assistant director and Melanie Johnson is production secretary. The story of Henry VIII and his six wives provides the framework of the story. The playwright uses this as his point of departure to look at modern man — where he is, where he's been, and where he's going. The play asks these questions and provides what Scanlon believes "to be the only answer, and to know the answer you'll have to -see ttie piav.'1 Scanlon is playing the lead, and only male, role of Henry VIII. His six wives are being played by the following young ladies, Katrina of Aragon will be played by Jerri Eurich, who you will undoubtedly remember for her roles in this years productions of "No Exit" and "Luke". Jane Seymour will be Becky Werner, also of "Luke" fame. Melanie Johnson, Readers' Theatre director, will appear as Anna of Cleves. Anne Boieyn will be portrayed by Kelly Dial, remembered for her many roles at CBC. Katheryn Howard will be played by attractive Darlene Trailor, a member of Readers' Theatre. The part of Kate Parr will be enacted by Jeanette Ware. The story presented in "Royal Gambit" is explained by the author in this way; "Henry VIII represents one type of modern man. The aspects of the modern age develop through the tragic- comedy of his life. The historical affairs with the six wives transcend history." Carol Iwane Is Simmons Hall Prexy Carol Iwane was elected president of the girls' dormitory for next fall. The four candidates nominated were Nancy Carroll, Laura Ban- ta, Nokuko Lindsey and Carol Iwane. The nomination was on the floor and the election was by secret ballot. Carol would like to see the girls have more fellowship with other off-campus girls, activities such as inviting off-campus girls for an orientation on dorm life has been suggested. "Orientation programs can be offered to off-campus students to show them that dorm life can be marvellous that we can learn how to get along with different people from different backgrounds." Baptist Youth Choir Plans Musical "Real" Penny Liner Thursday To Help Summer Mission The youth choir of Magnolia Avenue Baptist Church will present a folk musical "Real" Thursday night, May 25 for the CBC student body. The musical will begin at 8:00 in the gym. The choir wanted to give the CBC students an opportunity to see this musical before they left for the summer. The musical has a tremendous message for everyone. Directed by Dr. Philip Landgrave, the choir has worked on this for the past three months. Recently they sang a portion of it for the Greater LA Associ- ational semi - annual meeting. They also sang at the Orange County Youth Rally where 30 decisions were recorded. "Real" is the story of a young man's search to find a meaning in the Christian life. He discovers not only the saving power of Jesus Christ but the reality of the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit. He finds the reality of life through a vital, meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ. The choir is composed mostly of high school students but a few college students are participating. Becky Crawford, Carmen Sandoval, and Zella Whorton are the participating CBC students. RCC and UCR are also represented in the choir. The choir members are excited about the impact this musical has already had upon their lifes. They are praying for a rich experience for all CBC students. The fund raising for summer missions is nearing its final stages with only a few projects left for this year. The projects include a penny liner, a chapel offering and the gathering of pledges. The penny liner will be Thursday night at 6 by the dorms. Everyone lines ud their pennies in one continuous line to see how far the line can extend. The pennies are donated to summer missions. Last year $70 in pennies was given at the penny liner. The last chapel offering will Be May 24. Support this offering so the goal can be reached. The final project is the gathering of student pledges. Since many students are concerned they have made an effort to pledge to give varying amounts to the summer missions drive. Other students are involved in the gathering of these funds. CBC can still reach its goal so that all the summer missionaries will be able to serve this summer. CBC will have five of its students serving in this program so each students needs to support this mission with their prayers and their money. Goal $900 Money Earned $615 Needed $285 NEWS BRIEFS Mendelssohn's "Elijah" To Be Presented Sunday Seventh-day Adventist volunteer and professional musicians from throughout the Riverside - San Bernardino area will be combining forces to present Mendelssohn's Elijah at the Loma Linda University Church Saturday, May 20, at 4 p.m. The church is located on University Avenue in Loma Linda. Performing in the sacred concert will be a 150-voice choir consisting of the University Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Loma Linda University Church Choir. They will be accompanied by the University Orchestra. Bjorn Keyn, associate professor of music in the College of Arts and Sciences on the La Sierra campus and director of the event, de scribes the Elijah concert as "one of the most dramatic oratories ever written." Soloists featured in the performance are: long-time La Sierra resident Sharon Sage, contralto (as Jezebel and an angel); Colleen Schwandt, soprano (as the widow); Gregory Wait, tenor (as Obadiah and Ahab); and Keith Halvorson, bass (as Elijah). The drama club will be meeting Monday, May 22 at 2 p.m. in the drama office. Please be sure and be there. The junior trumpet recital to be given by Marvin Tapsfieldand Victor Black on May 18 will be changed to May 22, at 8 p.m. in the college chapel. Bulletin ... This week's ASB election was forced into a run-off between Steve Holden and Wally Grubb. The run-off will be held next Monday and Tuesday to decide who shall hold the office of ASB president, since no one candidate received a majority of the votes as is called for in the ASB constitution. The Senate also decided to include candidates for cheerleader on the ballot for next week. Try- outs will be held tonight as planned and the candidates will be introduced Friday in chapel. MAGIC SHOW - Four professional magicians, including former Riversider, Palmer Tilden, will present a "Modern Magic Show" in the Landis Auditorium of Riverside City College, May 26 and 27. The shows, at 8 p.m. May 26, and 2:00 and 8 p.m. May 27, will benefit the Riverside County Kidney Foundation. Tickets for the Riverside shows are $2 for adults, and $1 for students. Tickets are available at Harris'; Gillette Records and Cheney's Music. HORACIO GUTIERREZ - S. Hurok presents Horacio Gutierrez, the 1970 prize winner in Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Soloist will be with the Riverside Symphony Orchestra. This concert will be presented in the Riverside Civic Auditorium, Sunday afternoon, May 21, at 3:00 p.m.
