We BANNER, May 20, 1977, Page 1 1977 commencement speakers Mrs. Harold (Betty) Coble, authoress of Woman-Aware and Choosing (Broadman Press, 1975) and noted lecturer will be principal commencement speaker at Cal Baptist. The twenty-fourth annual exercises will be June 4 at 7:30 on the front lawn ofthe campus. Sharing the platform with Mrs. Coble will be students Alma Rhoades and Ken Hornbeck in a dramatic duo presentation on college life. Mrs. Coble has developed a student folder and teacher's guide to Pg. 2 - Christian college? Pg. 3 - A house divided Pg. 4 - Senior chapel Pg. 5 - Pat's new secretary Pg. 6 - Taking leave of CBC Pg. 7 - Warbabes beaten Pg. 8 - Soccer preview Summer yearbook supplement This year the 1977 Angelos is featuring a summer supplement to the original book already beingdis- tributed. The supplement will feature Campus Day, commencement, baccalaureate, honors day, and the closing sections of baseball and softball. It will be available in August. Current students may pick up their supplements in the News Bureau Office. Seniors may leave their addresses with the News Bureau Office and the supplement will be mailed to them. For the first time in recent years, seniors will actually have coverage of their own commencement in their yearbook. "It has always been a problem," stated Carmen Sandoval, advisor, "to feature commencement in the yearbook. Usually high quality people are involved in the ceremonies but there just didn't seem to be an appropriate way to include them in the following year's book," she said. On another note, Sandoval encouraged students to enroll in the summer Angelos class for one (1) or two (2) units. In addition to completing the supplement, the summer class will be involved in making the fundamental decisions for the 1978 yearbook. Any input or suggestions are welcomed according to Sandoval. Betty Coble complement Woman-Aware and Choosing, a frequent text for women's seminars. She is currently writing her second book on ministers' wives to be published by Convention Press. In addition, she is a member of Christian Writer's Guild, conducts two classes of Woman-Aware, conducts three- day seminars and is in demand as a banquet and retreat speaker. She was a lecturer at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary last year and has served as president of the California Minister Wives Association and as vice president of the Southern Baptist General Convention of California. She and her husband, Harold, pastor of Mid-Cities Baptist Church in Westminster, have three children. Edward Glen Paden, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church of Sacramento, will be the baccalaureate speaker at Cal Baptist. The twenty-fourth annual baccalaureate services will be Friday, June 3 at 7:30 in the Magnolia Ave- Edward Glen Paden nue Baptist Church Auditorium. Sharing the platform with Paden will be student speaker, Phil Bus- bee. Paden has been a key leader in Cal Baptist's million dollar Thrust Into the Future program. He teaches a weekly Bible class at the state capitol and has served as president ofthe Fairfield Suisun Ministerial Association, as field supervisor for the Doctor of Ministry program at Golden Gate Seminary and as vice president of the trustees of Golden Gate Seminary. In addition, he has served on the Southern Baptist Committee on Boards, as president, as chairman and as a member of the executive board ofthe Southern Baptist General Convention of California. Paden has also served in pastorates at Fairfield, Ridgecrest, Alameda and Pilot Hill. He is a graduate of Golden Gate Seminary (Th.B., 1960) and has attended Pasadena City College and Cal Baptist. Changes in the Banner staff Next fall the Banner staff will continue under the leadership of Cyndi Hurst as editor. Returning to the Banner editorial staff following a semester as a sports writer will be Jan Price. This combination, according to Carmen Sandoval, advisor, should produce an award-winning effort. This year the Banner staff has been involved in an ongoing, self- study of the publication. In addition they have studied the Los An- Future "Super RA's * Friday the thirteenth was a lucky day for seven women and six men. Why? They were chosen Resident Assistants (or alternates) for the 1977-78 school year. After over a month of information sessions; interviews with Gloria Halley, Ramon Garcia, and Denny Ross; and a personality inventory test, the decisions were reached. Marsha Brown, Cathy Jones, Jana Lee, Jocelyn Barnes, and Sharon Holman will be Simmons Hall RA's next fall. Alternates are Cyndi Hurst and Ruth Stacy (in case these or other women RA's are unable to fulfill their responsibilities). Charlie Mueller, Dan Martin, Jim Hines, and Randy Lanthrop have been selected to fulfill the responsibilities of RA's at Smith Hall in September. Lyndell Brow- der and Larry Jones are alternates. Appointments to specific wings have not been completed as of yet. Cyndi Hurst & Jan Prier geles Times, The Riverside Press Enterprise and numerous Southern Baptist state papers. This summer a report will be published regarding the results of a questionnaire submitted to the staffs of all Southern Baptist college and university papers. In addition to studying their comments regarding cost, content, and management ot staff, the staff has studied and critiqued copies of papers submitted by the schools. Next year promises to bring a change in the sports, letters, and editorial logos as well as a facelift to the entire Banner through the possible adaptation of a different headline style. Also assisting in the Banner production will be Mike Lytle as sports editor with Lisa Keturi and Jose Lazo assisting. Sharon Smith, a new staffer, will train alongside Lytle in producing the sports page. There is still room for reporters and lay-out people as well as typists. Students who have a few free hours on Tuesday and Wednesday are encouraged to join the staff as typists and copy-readers. Assisting in the copy reading process will be Anna Jastromb. She will try to insure that submitted material conforms to Banner style. Pari Rickard joins the Banner staff as Advertising Mgr. He will help fund a weekly eight-page Banner. Rhapsody "well received" on tour by Jan Price The recent tour made by Rhapsody can only be considered terrific. From the response ofthe Northwest Baptist Youth Conference to the police officer who pulled the singers over to the side ofthe highway, the entire tour was "great" and the singers had a "good time." Mrs. Helen Walker, director of Rhapsody, felt that at the Northwest Baptist Youth Conference the singing ensemble was "well re- Cheerleaders chosen SUPPLEMENT ADDRESS FORM Name. At a voting of the student body at random (all comers could vote) last Tuesday, Karen Adams, Kim Bolinger, Cheryl Cox, Kris Klefstad, Patrice Noga, and Carey Salley were chosen to lead the Lancer cheering section at games for the 1977-78 soccer and basketball seasons. Simply because Rhapsody has just returned from tour doesn't mean that they haven't any more performances. To give just a sample of their calendar, Rhapsody will be performing: Sun., May 22 - Morning service at the Little Chapel at Forest Lawn. - Evening service at First Southern BaptistChurch of Canoga Park. Wed.,May23 - Annual church banquet of t h e First Baptist Church in Yu- caipa (also performing will be the Drama Trio). Sun., May 29 - First Baptist Church of Upland - morning service. - Emanuel Baptist Church in San Bernardino- evening service. If you're wondering how being stopped by a policeman could possibly be considered in the realm of having a "good time*." the ladies of Rhapsody were driving along their way and were stopped by a policeman who was a former student of CBC. After chatting with the officer no ticket was given. ASB positions filled ASB positions have recently been filled by appointment of a special ASB council. Tom Hixon received the commission of Business Manager for the 1977-78 school year. Assisting him as secretary will be Cathy Jones. Greg Fusion was chosen to serve as Student Relations officer. These three will work in cooperation with Judy White, Randy Bradshaw, and Jim Robertson to improve next year's ASB.
