The BANNER Vol. XXX, Issue IV October 11,1985 California Baptist College k College Experiences Re-evaluation ^ unning October of 1986jtalifornia Baptist Col- Jge will undergo a re- evaluation of all aspects of the institution in hopes of retaining accreditation. At the requests of students, Cal Baptist was first accredited in 1961. Visits from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the board that decides whether a school will be accredited or not, occur about once every ten years to all recognized colleges in the west. The purpose behind accreditation is to assure that the degrees gained by all students are recognized as valid degrees. Following Cal Baptist's first accreditation, the WASC visited about once every three years for a decade as is the "Standard and then not again until 1976. According to feanCarleto^accreditation wilPrB?rrrrp^oblem. We have gone 10 years without a visit, and if there had been any question of accreditation, we would have been re-evaluated long ago!' The most recent evaluation visit came in 1981 with the addition of the masters program to the Behavioral Science Department. In preparation for the evaluation visit, Dean Carleton has organized eight different task forces to evaluate nine different areas of the school and submit formal reports. Using as their standards those developed by the colleges and universities in the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The task forces having completed their respective reports, will then submit their documents to the Steering Committee who will then decide the necessary courses of action to correct the faults, if any, that are found. After the formal document is submitted some time before the end of this academic year, the WASC will then evaluate the document and visit the school for an extended period of time beginning in October of 1986 to confirm the report. In addition to confirming the report, the WASC will also make recommendations for the betterment of the school in the nine areas of concern. Assigned by Dean Carleton to act as chairs of these committees that will submit the required report are the following: Wayland Marler (facultyj^nstitiitinnftl Integrity; fitenhep Carlton7)\d- ministrationV Purposes and Direction; Noel Scott (Facul- ASCBC Decides Against Concert California Baptist College will not host a Fall Concert this year. The ASCBC council weighed the issue and decided against once again sponsoring the annual event. Money and past concert experiences have been pinpointed as causes. In the past years concerts have featured Keith Green, the Imperials, Benny Hester, Michelle Pillar and Koinonia. John Gibson, AS Council business manager, said "the concerts are held for the students. They aren't fundraisers but we (AS Council) want to break even. Last year we lost money at every concert!' He continued to state that much of the deficit is a direct result of the "Concerts for the Hungry" series last Spring. In the absence of the Fall Concert one fourth of the deficit is expected to be paid off. Dennis Sheridan, dean of student life, commented that "money is a major factor in this decision. The concerts have already proven to be a risk!' Low concert attendance in this area was also blamed as a culprit. Not only Riverside, but San Bernardino and surrounding cities have reported decreased participation. Activities Director, Jon Jarboe, feels that the money could be used in a wiser place. He said, "We are concentrating on making TWIRP Week and the Yule better than ever!' A Preview Day concert in the works. Chris Christian will headline the Preview Day activities February 21. Both Gibson and Jarboe stated that the Council is combining their efforts to present a first class concert. This is also in conjunction with the Homecoming festivities. The council expects a large attendance due to this fact. Plans are also forming for the possibility of a Spring Concert. The areas of the school that have been addressed before by the WASC include the amount of money that is spent to keep the college on par with other WASC member colleges. The most emphasized need is the library. The administration feels, however, that the money that would need to be spent on the library to up-date and provide with adequate reference materials is being better spent on more important areas of need right now. Also, in 1979 on a limited visit, the board made a formal suggestion that the school develop a better defined faculty polro:"-" mm Although the board has the power to refuse accreditation or grant it, the members of the review board for the WASC are other college professors and staff members. The purpose of the board is /Z^ / mm»mm ,( CBC prepares for 10 year to help improve the institutions they examine from an objective viewpointr—As a result thereof, the suggestions are understood to be observations of peers as far as the faculty is concerned. Stated Dean Carleton, "The self-study we are conducting is a very big task!' review for accreditation. With the help of the faculty already employed and the -assistance of others that will be called on, this setf-stuc will help to improve the school in areas of real need. Special guests such as Michael Jackson, Twisted their appearances, perform ing some of their best rock and roll tunes. The threat of rain did not deter the enthusiasm of the crowds when the spot-light hit the performers as they went into their "jammin' " numbers. Twelve groups in all comprised this CBC mini concert beginning with Michael Jackson and winding up with a big finish from the Autos. Air Guitar '85 was co- sponsored by the ASCBC and the RAs and headed by Jon Jarboe with help from Tim Brown, Randy Barnes and various other people. Judging for the competition was done by CBC's own Tom Jones, Ron Schaeffer from Southern California Colleges and Mike Capriotti from University of California Riverside. third, we have the student life Student Life staff placing with ... with ...
