X The BANNER Vol. XXXI, Issue XII California Baptist College April 20, 1987 Shakespeare's b-day honored Actor returns to CBC Internationally-known Shakespearean actor Patrick Stewart will return to Cal Baptist for another lecture- recital on Apr. 23. Stewart is a senior member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a leading player with the national Theatre of Great Britain. He will give his 90-minute presentation at 1:30 p.m. in the college's Wallace Book of Life Theatre. The program is free and open to the public. He will be at Cal Baptist to acknowledge Shakespeare's birthday and to help promote the college's upcoming production of "Love's Labor Lost." He gave a two-hour workshop on campus last month. The college's production opens May 1 in the same theatre-on campus. Additional dates are May 2,4, and 5, and all performances are at 8 p.m. His lecture will feature the character Shylock from "The Merchant of Venice." He will comment about and perform most of Shylock's demanding lines. Stewart has played important roles in more than 17 Shakespearean productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Leaders for frosh chosen Twenty Cal Baptist students have been named as Lifeline leaders for the 1987-88 school year. Lifeline leaders conduct small groups of new students through the Lifeline program under the auspices of the college's Student Life office. The following students have been named as leaders: Damon Adcock, Amy Benner, Robert Hendricks, Kerri Hollinger, Carol Juneau, Laura Lewis, Sandy Little, Rosa Luna, Carola Lynch, Kim McBroom, Robert Newton, Julie Perkins, Robin Pottberg, Tim Relph, Lindy Ross, Sandy Schmeidt, Stacy Scott, Ric Slagle, Randy Stacks, and Alice Stubblefield. gjli Council applications due Applications for ASCBC Executive Council appointed positions—secretary, assistant activities director, communications director—are due Wednesday, Apr. 22. Applications are available in the ASCBC office. Family housing banquet soon The family housing spring banquet "Celebrating Unity" will be held Friday, Apr. 24, at 7 p.m. Prime rib dinner will be served in the campus cafeteria at a cost of $3 per person. Reservations should be made in the family housing office. Banquet theme 'New Song' "A New Song" is the theme for a spring banquet honoring outstanding students and summer missionaries who will be representing Cal Baptist in missions this summer. The banquet will be May 15 at 6:30 p.m. Children of Promise will provide special music and the cost is $7.50 per person. Fall pre-registration begins Pre-registration for the fall and summer semesters begins Apr. 27 and continues through May 8. All current students may register in advance and confirm their fall enrollment by paying one quarter of the final bill by Aug. 7. Students enrolled for the summer term must pay by May 26. ■: THE GRAY SHED near the Annie Gabriel Library is now under renovation and will eventually be used by Cal Baptist's Socratic Club as a coffee shop and used book store, as well as a casual meeting place. (Photo by Lori Jean Lothenore) State boards stage talks Members of two boards of the California Southern Baptist Convention met at Cal Baptist on Mar. 27 to discuss strategies for building a major Baptist university here for the West Coast. Baptist leaders from around the state attended the meeting which was chaired by Executive Board Chairman Dan Coker and co-chaired by Cal Baptist trustee board Chairman Nolan Kennedy. College President Russell Tuck Softball coach relieved of post Steve Burmaster, head coach of the Cal Baptist softball team, was removed from that position indefinitely recently. Burmaster is also head coach of the volleyball squad, but it is unclear whether he will continue in that role next fall or not. The action came on Monday, Apr. 13. Members of the administration refused to comment on the situation at press time. and Baptist state executive C. B. Hogue were also present The goal of the meeting, attended by about 40 state leaders, was to formulate plans of action through a nominal grouping session. The ASCBC, RA spots chosen „ Various student leadership positions for 1987-88 were filled recently as elections for ASCBC positions and selections for resident assistant positions took place. John Chesnut, junior, was elected ASCBC president in the election. Other officers include Kim McBroom, vice president; Jane Crye, business manager; Melissa Whatley, activities director; and Susan Bianco, intramurals director. Don Alexander, junior, was elected as Banner editor. Smith Hall resident assistants include Randy Hanlin, Joe Lopez, Mark Baker, Chuck Kehoe, Mark Arbaugh, and Matt Browning. The nine R.A.s for Simmons Hall meeting focused on the questions of defining the importance of Cal Baptist to Southern Baptists, what actions the Executive Board should take to show the importance of the college, and to define ways CBC can be kept in the central circle of Baptist Life in California. Reactions of these questions are being compiled and will be forwarded to the state convention leaders for future assignments and action. The meeting is a reult of a presentation made by Tuck at a January Executive Board meeting. Those in attendance responded positively to Tuck's report and agreed that a strategy meeting should be called. The Mar. 27 meeting marks the first time such dialogue has been exchanged by state Baptist leaders representing both the executive and college boards. are Carole Adams, Lori Jean Lothenore, Rhonda Corliss, Michelle Gover, Samantha Hansen, Patti Patty, Andrea Martinez, Rebecca Mc- Elfresh, and Tina Sterner.
