By Kryn Grace Staff writer for The Banner Saturday, October 21 was no ordinary day at the Lancer Arms apartments. Kevin and Kerry Pope went door to door seeking donations to send to the Santa Cruz earthquake relief effort. Pedley Baptist Chruch worked with the Jaycee's to gather clothing, food, and other items for the families who lost everything in the earthquake's destruction. Building representatives helped the Pope's in gathering goods and letting people know where to drop items off. The pile on the sidewalk in front of apartment #11— consisting of garbage bags full of clothing and boxes overflowing with food-reached the windows and spilled on to the lawn. A truck belonging to a Pedley Baptist member was filled with the items by no less than ten residents, including three grade- school boys. The residents of Lancer Arms came to a realization that the earthquake affected people who were much like those living on this campus. When the truck arrived in Santa Cruz, the Jaycee's informed Pedley Baptist Church that their truck was among the largest to arrive in the area. The tremendous response shown in this particular effort fueled the fire for a canned food drive the following week. The No Exit and the ASCBC office accepted cans, and then the Pope's loaded them for delivery to the Jaycee office on Sunday, October 29. Kerry said, "The response to the effort was overwhelming." It is encouraging to see families and students giving of themselves to help those suffering because of a disaster. This leads to an understanding that this is a very small world we live in, and the help we offer others will one day return to us. The 89 Vote Riverside residents will go to the polls on Tuesday to elect the city's mayor.
