The nner Volume XXXIV, Number 1 A Publication of the Students of Cal Baptist September8, 1989 Plans progress for student center By Dan Kohn Editor of The Banner A proposed student center is targeted for completion by the end of this semester. This temporary student center will be funded partially by a $10 per semester fee which was passed overwhelmingly by students during a referendum last spring. The student center will be located on the basement floor of the James Building. The center will stretch from Student health Services on one side to the bookstore on the other. Tentative plans include knocking down walls to include hallway space in the project In early spring 89, the ASCBC Executive Council formed the Collegium Centrum Committee to investigate the possibility of a student center on campus. The committee determined that there was a need for a student center and made a tentative proposal for a student center in the ceramics building. During the summer, the committee further studied the ceramics building and determined that the cost of renovating the building and relocating the ceramics program would be prohibitive. An alternate plan to use the basement area was proposed to the Executive Council by ASCBC President Daniel Pryfo- Briefs Before the big one drops: The Socratic Club is sponsoring The Atomic Cafe IV at the No Exit tonight at 10 pm. Be prepared for ah explosion of creativity as readers present published and original poetry in a beatnik style. I Scream, you scream... AH will scream for free ice cream on tues. Sept 12 at 7pm in Harden Square. The Citizens Committee is presenting an ice cream social with fun, fellowship, and free food. The entire campus community is invited Add/Drop Deadline: Thurs. Sept. 14 is the last day to add a class for credit or drop a class with a refund. Lancer Arms BBQ At 4pm on Saturday, Sept. 9 (tomorrow), there will be a family housing barbeque for Lancer Arms residents. gle. On August 9, the proposal was approved. This temporary student center should not be confused with the student center being planned to go into the future science building, which could be built in 2-3 years. Currently priorities are being established for what will be included in the student center and what type of food service will be provided. There will be an open forum in the near future to answer any questions that students may have about the student center. Student Leaders help new student Suzette Shaw to make the transition from her Redlands home to Simmons Hall. Ministry opportunities abound with BSU By Jeanine Bourcier Ministry, discipleship, and personal growth. These are the goals of the Baptist Student Union (BSU). The BSU is a minsi- try organization open to all students and not just Baptists. It sponsors various ministries designed allow students to share their faith, help the community and grow spiritually. The BSU helps to sponsor students to work as summer or semester missionaries. There are opportunities on summer evangelism teams for state, national and international positions. If you are interested in working as a summer missionary for 1990, stop by the BSU office. The deadline to apply is December 15. The Juvenile Hall ministry has been successful in the short time that it has been in progress. Students set up activities and try to get to know the kids so that they may share their faith. The students received an award from the County Commisioners for the outstanding quality of the program. Jeanette Clark and Rob Rawlings are the people to see if you are interested. * Habitat for Humanity is a ministry which involves helping homeless people build adequate housing for their families. Students may volunteer to help with the building, working side by side with the family. The family is thus investing "sweat equity." When the house is complete, the family then has a mortgage, which usually lasts about 20 years, then the house is theirs. For more information, contact Paula Sheridan. * Do you like to hear the pitter- patter of little feet? If so, perhaps the Children's Ministry is more your style. It is a once-a- week ministry to the children of the Lancer Arms apartments. The person to contact is Norma Brewer. * Special Witness Activity Training (SWAT) is a collection of teams of students dedicated to evangelism and church growth. Students will be working in the Trinity and Calvary Arrowhead Associations. On September 21 at 1:30pm, the interview for team leader positions will begin. Team training will start on September 25 at 3:30pm. Stop by the BSU office and Director Scott Key for information. * Something new this year will be the Fellowship of Christain Atheletes. It will include bible studies and ministry on campus. See Mark Benedetto for more information. * To help promote personal growth among the students, bible studies and discipleship groups will be forming. Come to the informational meeting on Monday, September 18 at 7:30pm on the second floor of Simmons Hall. For those of you who like to keep in touch with your younger see BSU, p.8 Donor pledges $1 Million (PIC) Cal Baptist College has received the largest pledge to the College in its 40 year history. An anonymous donor has pledged one million dollars in a commitment toward the Partners in Progress campaign currently underway. "I am very pleased that this friend of the College has caught our vision and expressed confidence in our future," said Presi dent Russell Tuck. The donor has pledged the million dollars toward construction of the proposed science building which will house classrooms, faculty offices, and laboratories. The facility will also include a student center. "At Cal Baptist we recognize the need to prepare students in the challenging fields of science and technology in an effort to posi tively impact their world," Tuck continued. The million dollar pledge pushed the Partners in Progress campaign closer to the victory goal of $5.2 million, with a current campaign total of $4.7 million in gifts and pledges. The pledge is to be paid in three annual installments, the first installment of $300,000 lias been received by the College.
