However, this is not Cal Baptist's first tennis team. The first team originated in 1968, and in 1974 the tennis team was nationally ranked. This year Cal Baptist was fortunate enough to gain an experienced coach to take the Pentz Tennis Center and create an international tennis team, with members from 7 countries. Reddy Gustine, head tennis coach, had previously been a tennis coach at the University of California at Riverside. Gustine resigned from this position because he believed he would prefer to be at a school with a stronger Christian atmosphere. Before coaching at UCR, Gustine was the assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame. Prior to this, Gustine was involved with the Chinese Jr. Davis Cup team. Gustine explained that this international team was possible by "a lot of luck, and a lot of hard work". Through having a lot of tennis years under his belt, Gus tine has attained contacts and knows where to look for the best players. These players include Tamer El Sawy (Egypt) a number one player on Egypt's Davis Cup team. Frank Ofori (Ghana) was placed number one in Africa for the 18 and under age division. Dave Fontaine (France) is a two- time collegiate All-American. Jonas Molin (Sweden) is ranked in Sweden. Tyson Bond (USA- Texas) was the consolation winner in 5/6 Tournament of Intercollegiates in San Diego. Andre Jones (USA- Long Beach) was ranked in the top 50 of Jr. College players. Murray Tanner (New Zealand) was ranked #4 in New Zealand for the 16 and under age division. Paul Norton (USA- CA.) played high school tennis at Lancaster High. Todd Moerer (USA-CA.) played #1 at Mt. Shasta Junior College. Paul Cheng (Taiwan- CA.) played four years at Red- lands High, and one year at San Bernadino Jr. College.
