The nner Volume XXXV, Number 9 A Publication of the Students of Cal Baptist March 1, 1991 Scholarship formula changed Trustees revise financial aid By Sheri Williamson Assistant Editor Students who are receiving institutional aid will be affected by the changes that were made regarding in- house scholarships at the Board of Trustees meeting on Feb. 8. A motion was passed to change scholarships previously awarded as a percent of tuition into an award of a flat dollar amount. Also new eligibility requirements for some of the awards have been established. The changes will be effective with the 1991-1992 school year. Dennis Sheridan, Vice- President of Student Life, stated three reasons for the restructuring which took place. First, he stated that there is an "attempt to begin moving to academic scholarships earned while a student is in college." Second, the changes took place to try to get better control of the budget. Rate Hike: ustees to make increases in tuition, room and board for dorm residents Lancer Arms. ASCBC: There are a ^r Check the ASCBC Update; Lastly Sheridan said that "the catalog lacks clarity, there is too much vagueness." These changes were made as an attempt to provide clarity and understanding about institutional scholarships. Dr. Steve Carleton, Academic Dean, was in agreement with the reasons for the changes. He stated that this will provide "a system that is a little more managa- ble...there won't be so many open-ended scholarships." Because the motion was only passed for the 1991-1992 school year, the Board will have to place this item on their agenda again next year. Sheridan gave some assurance when he stated that this item would be like the budget. It would be automatic that the Trustees would consider financial aid policy from year to year. Carleton commented that the "the Board will have to struggle with the decisions to increase aid as inflation occurs." Vondella McCombs, who is the Financial Aid Director, stated that there is one policy change of which all students should be aware of. Those students who are applying for, or already have institutional aid, must complete a financial aid file by Nov. 1 for fall semester and by April 1 for the spring semester to maintain eligibility for institutional scholarships. Listed below is a comparison of institutional scholarships that were given in 1990-1991 and those that will be given in 1991- 1992 with the changes made. 1990-1991: Academic Scholarships up to $800 for F/SP up to $300 for I/SM Val/Sal Scholarship up to 100% of tuition Athletic Scholarship up to 100% of tuition See Trustees, page 12 Debbie Gray and Gordon Hannon, the new Homecoming king and queen.
