The nner "We will shout for joy when you are victorious and we will lift up our banners in the name of our God." Psalm 20:5 Volume 41, Number 3 A Publication of the Students of California Baptist College October 15, 1996 Erwin McManis speaks at Spiritual Emphasis Week By Molly Chilver Staff Writer The Event Formerly Known as Revival was a week filled with life-changing decisions for some, and a week of redirection for others. Speaker Erwin McManis from the Church on Brady in Los Angeles reached out to students at all different points in their walk with God. McManis quoted Shakespeare in his first sermon on October 9, saying that some of us are born great, some of us achieve greatness, and some of us have greatness bestowed upon us. McManis used his own life experience to illustrate this and come to the conclusion that God gives us his greatness through Jesus. This was an exciting week to learn about the great things the Lord has planned for us. McManis showed all of his points by using his own life experiences as examples of how great the Lord is. Wednesday night in the Wallace Book of Life Theater, Praise House led an awesome time of worship. The Holy Spirit was truly felt in this time. The worship was followed by student testimonies and drama, after which McManis got up to address the crowd. McManis spoke out of 2 Chronicles 6:32 and challenged the students to pray for those who do not know the Lord. Through all of his sermons McManis illustrated his point that having an Nicole Salas/r/ie Banner Erwin McManis preaches during evening Revival service intimate relationship with God can bring great things into one's life. He shared a personal story about when he was a pastor in West Dallas and bought a landfill (without knowing that it was one) to build a church on. He told us about how there was no soil to build on and so the people of his church prayed for soil. And when the city came to do another core sample, his church rejoiced in the name of the Lord because they found soil and the city removed its red tag from the property. Thursday night in the B.O.L., McManis spoke again after Praise House led worship. He had planned a sermon, but he felt the Lord leading him in a different direction. God is calling each of us to be a missionary of some kind. If we apply this verse to us here at Cal Baptist it would say, ... in all of Riverside, in California and in the United States and to the ends of the world. One of the two biggest responsibilities we have as Christians is to tell other people about Christ and his love for us. We need to tell the less fortunate who do not know Jesus as their savior that he died on the cross for them so that they could know the great joy and peace we, as Christians, have. On November 1 - 3, about sixty people from Cal Baptist will get first hand experience at sharing Christ with the lost through a short-term mission trip. The Urban Plunge Ministry, supervised by Gloria Batres, the ... Missions Outreach Coordinator, hopes that "the students will increase their burden for the lost and realize the great responsibility to reach out with compassion toothers." For the 13 students and two faculty members who go to each city, this will be a wonderful chance to see themselves grow as Christians. Freshman Paula Smith, a student participating in the L.A. mission trip said that she plans to gain "more compassion for people in need and greater understanding of how God is working in the inner cit ies." Christians who do not feel God leading them into a certain ministry should always remember to pray for the missionaries and the lost. The bible says in Phillippians 4:6, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known to God."
