The nner "We will shout for joy when you are victorious and we will lift up our banners in the name of our God." Psalm 20:5 Volume 41, Number 4 A Publication of the Students of California Baptist College October 29, 1996 Octoberfest provides fun for campus and community By Nicole Salas Staff Writer If you wanted to see Kent Dacus or Ted Murcray be a ballerina for ten seconds, then you should have attended the Octoberfest last Saturday. Octoberfest was a carnival put on by the California Baptist College students, clubs and staff. It was open to the community. The carnival started around 3:30 p.m. and ended around 7:00 p.m. There was food, games, and fun. ASCBC sponsored Octoberfest and gave two dollars in free tickets to anyone who came. The tickets could be used for any of the games or events. For instance, someone could have put in a warrant for someone else's arrest. The arrested person had to sit in jail for ten minutes or wait only five minutes and take a chance at a grab bag. The grab bag was full of little things to do like be a ballerina or sing the Gilligan's Island theme song. Dacus and Murcray were obviously looking for the easy way out but seemed to get the harder way. One could also get married. Lucky for lovebirds, Elvis was there and holding ceremonies all day. There was also Karaoke that attracted the singers who just wanted to sing their hearts out. If you were in for a challenge, you could have taken a chance at the homemade bull. The bull was homemade, but was bucking contestants off with no problem. If you were a girl and always wanted a guy to write you a personal poem to describe your beauty, then you missed your chance. If one was bold, then he could have thrown a whipped cream pie at an administration member. There was a choice of Dacus, Jerry King, Anthony Lammons, Kris Smith, and Joe Womack. Maybe someone just wanted to jump around. There was an Astrojump and it was filled with excitement. Maybe you just felt like bowling. At the skeeball booth you were given five balls to score 60 points. Ifyoudid, you were given a prize. And if you wanted to take home a cake, you could have joined the cake walk. Octoberfest was a fun carnival that cost barely any money at all. It attracted a crowd that allowed everyone to have a good time, even those being arrested or those wiping whipped cream off of their faces. The Astrojump was one of the many attractions at Octoberfest The Athletic Ministry offers support for athletes By Aimee Munson Staff Writer "Athletic Ministry is an opportunity for me to model Christ to athletes," said Rick York, the Athletic Minister for California Baptist College. Athletic Ministry is a way to show these athletes that you can be a competitive athlete without compromising your principles in Christ. The Athletic Ministry meets together on Friday mornings at 7:00 in the A. J. Staples room to pray. There have been 20 athletes meeting on a regular basis, and 40 athletes have come at least one time. "I want to build a solid foundation to go from," said York. York also said that he was happy about how things were going and how the athletes were in volved. It is not just the athletes that can be involved, but also anybody who likes sports and who cares about the athletes. Ministry starts with loving and just by going to the games and supporting your fellow students you can be involved in Athletic Ministry. "The goal of the Athletic Ministry is to help Christian athletes grow in their faith and to represent Christ in a manner that brings nonbelievers to a saving relationship with Christ," York said. The one main thing that the Athletic Ministry does is showing the athletes that they care and support them. Even if you aren't involved in Athletic Ministry, we should support each other as brothers and sisters in Christ. This could be done by just leaving a little note to tell them that you're praying for them. If you are interested in becoming involved in Athletic Ministry, stop by the Campus Ministries office and talk to Rick York. You are also welcome to stop by for prayer on Fridays at 7:00 in the A. J. Staples room.
