DEAN BROWN TO LEAVE Gary Collins-To Be New Dean of Students DEAN OF STUDENT AFFAIRS, Olie T. Brown, discusses plans with dean-elect, Gary Collins. OVER 700 ATTEND GALA EVENT By NANCY BAKER "I have asked to be relieved from my responsibilities as Dean of Student Affairs," said Olie T. Brown. His successor as of this June will be Gary Collins, presently the assistant Dean of Student Affairs. "1 initiated the move. I've been thinking and praying about it for a long time," explained Brown, the only original faculty member at CBC. Feeling that the increased involvement of the student body brings a . demand into his office that he cannot handle, he wanted to give his position to a younger man. "We're- cxtreiftciy fortunate U» have a man who knows the students, loves the students, and is respected by the students and faculty members as much as Gary Collins. I would have felt hesitant to leave if there wasn't a man who could take my place and do an even better job," said Dean Brown. After a Sabbatical leave with his wife, Mrs. Sibyl Brown, head librarian. Brown intends to return in a full-time capacity and fill any needs at the college, including teaching. Recommended by Dean Olie Brown to Dr. James Staples, President; and by Dr. Staples to the Board of Trustees, Gary Collins was accepted unanimously last Friday during the trustee meeting. As of yet, he has not had time to make plans with Dr. Staples, but he is "very pleased and excited" and looking forward to assuming responsibility as Dean of Student Affairs . The former dean of men and sociology teacher has been at CBC since 1966 and returned this fall after a year's Sabbatical leave. Dean Brown's leave will hopefully begin in September, to be used for study, travel, or a combination. The only dean of the college at CBC's birth in 1950, Olie Brown became Dean of Student Affairs in 1958 after the creation of Academic Dean divided responsibilities. In that position, he has found the greatest challenge and inspiration. 'The students have been a blessing to me," said Brown. "In whatever capacity I continue in, I hopefully will still be close to the students and can remain the foreign student advisor. "I've learned a great deal as Dean of Student Affairs. I've seen changes in the students. They have become more independent, more concerned, and perhaps more compassionate." £ 62/ §1919 Pledged At CBC Support Dinner At a dinner designed to show CBC's appreciation to the Riverside Community for its support, Dr. James Staples, President, announced the pledge of over $62,000 towards the further development ofthe college.
