Abstract |
In 1969, at the height of a revolutionary political movement, a group of radical student activists calling themselves the Weathermen took control of Students for a Democratic Society, the radical organization responsible for organizing hundreds of thousands of students against the Vietnam war. The Weathermen initiated a series of coordinated domestic bombings designed to inspire a revolution against the American government, leaving the wreckage of the student movement in its wake. Jacques Ranciere's unique redefinition of democratic politics offers new insights towards the strengths of the student movement's ascent and the weaknesses that contributed to its decline. Chapter 1 reveals SDS as a quintessential Rancierian movement, until it adopted more militant tactics in 1967. Chapter 2 explains the process by which SDS discarded the conditions of its success, while generating a temporary, yet unsustainable, explosion in the movement's participation. Chapter 3 adapts Ranciere's theories to offer an explanation for the Weathermen's failed revolution. Ultimately the student movement's decline offers essential guidance for the efforts of future activists, revealing possible approaches to heighten the frequency with which political movements occur within societies that call themselves democratic. |
