Abstract |
Using the epic film Gone With the Wind, Kara Walker's silhouettes and the peculiar aspects of Henry Darger's life and artwork, I plan on discussing the intersection of politics, patriarchy, and sexuality during the antebellum. First, I will set a foundation outlining Americans' memory of the Civil War through the film, Gone with the Wind and popular culture's influence on the collective vision of antebellum. The stereotypical characters, their personalities and film aesthetics addressed will be revisited in Kara Walker's construction of the south. Then, I will further explore the historical significance of slave women's roles in society and on the plantation using Kara Walker's work that parodies the narratives in Uncle Tom's Cabin and Gone with the Wind. Similar "unspeakable" traumas that women and slaves endured that are aesthetically detailed in Kara Walker's silhouettes are also graphically depicted in Henry Darger's collages. Lastly, this alliance between slaves and women is solidified through violent war and repression in Darger's collages. Using their own unique method of "cutting" each artist recreates a delicate balance between the reality of antebellum living and a certain perception in their corresponding aesthetic components. I will use these artists as a trope to discuss this "cut" between reality and imagination in the realm of sexuality, repression and the perceived memory of antebellum. |
